Specimen Type

Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) - sterile plain tube. Do聽NOT聽collect glucose test in fluoride oxalate.

Deliver specimen to Specimen Reception within 15mins of collection.

Comments

Protein & Glucose is always performed when microscopy & culture is requested. May also be requested as separate tests.

LAB NOTES:聽If microscopy & culture is requested, forward all tubes to聽RCH Haematology for processing.

If lactate is also requested and there is more than one tube, spin tube received on ice pillow and forward on ice to聽RCH Biochemistry for lactate, protein & glucose; forward remaining tubes to RCH Haematology. If only one tube is received for multiple tests to be shared between Biochemistry and Bacteriology,聽ask the requesting clinician to prioritise the tests.
