Indirect inguinal hernia - pre-referral

  • This is anÌýelective surgical condition.

    Assessment and when to refer

    History and physical examination for all ages

    • Indirect inguinal hernia (hernia extending into the scrotum or the groin)
      • Can reduce
      • Not transilluminable
      • Cannot get above it
        • Refer by calling and faxingÌýsurgeon of choice within 2 days
          • for child < 6 weeks of age
        • Refer to General Surgery for review
          • Within 2 weeks for child < 6 months of age
          • Within 2 months for child > 6 months of age

    Diagnostic imaging has no role in the management of these conditions.
